Joe was born in Birmingham in 1958 and in 1960 moved to Reading, Berkshire, where he he now lives. He trained as a bricklayer and it was while working in the trade he developed a strong interest in traditional building techniques and traditional materials that led to a determination to specialise in restoration works on historic buildings.

Joe is a member of the Guild of Bricklayers and in the last eight years has been employed by several of the country's most respected conservation firms including Owlsworth IJP Limited, St Blaise Limited and the Cliveden Conservation Workshop Limited. He was head bricklayer for St Blaise and has managed a number of important projects for Cliveden Conservation where, on one demanding project, his work was described as "exemplary".

The selection of appropriate materials for conservation works is of great importance and Joe has extensive experience of dealing with manufacturers and suppliers of traditional products such as hand-made bricks, flints, and lime. However, his experience is not limited to the use of these materials and he has also worked with other traditional materials, including wattle-and-daub, timber, stone, and chalk-rock.

Joe enjoys using traditional building techniques and has worked on tuck-pointed brickwork and with gauged brickwork. He also has experience of working in the interior of churches, repairing and fitting stonework to monuments and other features including arches, sedilias and piscinas.
